TAG:Important Characteristics When Choosing 5G Antennas

Even though you probably haven’t heard of 5G yet, it will play an integral role in the next generation of mobile devices and networks. Many experts predict that 5G will revolutionize how we use mobile devices and access the internet, but implementing this technology requires some critical considerations from businesses like using a reliable 5G antenna manufacturer. To help your business keep up with the latest innovations, we’ve compiled a list of some essential characteristics to look for when purchasing 5G antennas.

Point-To-Point Antennas

These antennas are used to connect two antennas and send a signal across a great distance. Point-to-Point Wireless is often used in high-bandwidth applications like 3D video distribution or applications that require very low latency. Point-to-Point Wireless was once most commonly used in military installations but now has many commercial applications. Important characteristics include antenna gain, beamwidth, and frequency range (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz). Beam widths can range from 1 degree up to 180 degrees wide-angle to cover as much area as possible. However, signal strength may be weaker at extreme angles due to signal loss.

Point To Multi-Point Antennas

Today, the most widely utilized antenna design for Wi-Fi is monostatic, point-to-point (PTPC) antenna. They are designed to broadcast in only one direction and aren’t useful for networking with multiple devices at once. Because of their low power requirements, 5G antennas will likely be built for a single user at a time. Because of that, monostatic antennas will not meet your needs; instead, make sure you are buying from an experienced PTMP 5G antenna manufacturer. If you have questions about how best to configure your 5G network, reach out to an expert who can help make sure you’re making an informed decision about antennas!

Range And Power

A 5G antenna must have a good range. This means that it should be able to reach a mile or two. However, even a shorter range is okay if it can transmit power as well. A low-powered antenna may be able to cover a smaller area, but with high-speed internet available at most places now, users want their connection to work even when they are in remote areas such as campgrounds and valleys where there are fewer cell towers. 5G antennas should be able to overcome obstacles to deliver high speeds. They should also have powerful amplifiers so that these antennas will not be useless because of weak signals from a tower far away. Also, keep in mind that these antennas are for outdoor use only.

Gain Considerations

This is probably one of your most important considerations for selecting a 5G antenna. Gain refers to how much power an antenna can collect from a signal and transmit with respect to distance from its source. The higher gain antennas are typically more expensive but also provide better performance in terms of range and signal quality. You should choose antennas with a high dB gain (range of numbers you will see for dB: +4dB, +9dB, etc.). For within reason, using a high-gain antenna, if possible, as many dB as you can afford is good!

Interference

5G antennas are larger than 2.4/5G antennas and will likely be placed closer to buildings, businesses, and homes for improved connectivity. That proximity brings an increased chance of interference from other 5G signals or from Wi-Fi (and vice versa). Because of that risk, it’s important to make sure that your 5G antenna manufacturer is taking steps to create as little interference as possible.

As 5G technology continues to develop, we’ll likely see more and more cell phones come with built-in jammers, but if you want a device specifically designed for reducing outside interference on your 5G network—or need one now because you’re having issues—get in touch with a pro.
