Specifications

A 5 dBi omni covering 824-960 MHz in a 600 mm fibreglass radome 20 mm in diameter, weighing 1.0 kg. The horizontal pattern is a full 360 degrees and the vertical beam is 35 degrees plus or minus two, VSWR is at or below 1.5 across the 136 MHz span, and the single port is an N-Type male connector. It is the general purpose omni for sites that serve more than one 900 MHz band from a single antenna.

One antenna across 136 MHz

The 824-960 MHz range covers the 850 MHz cellular band, the 900 MHz GSM band and the 900 MHz ISM band, which in many markets are used by different services on the same site. A single omni that holds a VSWR of 1.5 across that span removes the need for a second antenna and a second feeder.

The trade is gain. A narrowband design at 900-930 MHz can reach 8 dBi in a much longer radome; this antenna holds 5 dBi across the whole range instead. For a site that uses only one of the bands, the narrower antenna is the more efficient choice.

Five decibels and a 35 degree beam

At 5 dBi the coverage is a compromise between reach and near-field fill. Mounted at 10 m, the beam reaches the ground at about 19 m and extends to roughly 400 m with a 5 W radio and a 3 dBi remote. For a small cell, a rural hotspot or a machine-to-machine base station, that footprint covers a useful area without a dead zone under the antenna.

The 35 degree vertical beam is the widest in the 900 MHz omni family after the 3 dBi booster unit, which makes the antenna tolerant of mounting height. If the site height is fixed by other equipment, that tolerance is worth more than an extra 2 dB of gain.

Fibreglass and the 20 mm profile

The radome is filament wound fibreglass, 20 mm in diameter and 600 mm long. At 900 MHz the radome wall is a small fraction of a wavelength, so the material has little effect on the pattern, but fibreglass still offers better UV stability than a painted ABS tube and does not chalk over time.

The 1.0 kg weight is concentrated at the base connector. Clamp the antenna at the base and keep 200 mm of clearance from a metal mast; at 900 MHz a mast within a quarter wavelength of the radome produces a visible null on one side of the pattern.

Where this antenna fits

It is the general purpose omni for 900 MHz sites that serve more than one band, or where the band plan may change. It is also the usual choice for a GSM repeater installation that needs the full 824-960 MHz range rather than the 900-930 MHz slice.

Where the site is an outdoor hotspot with a single operator and a fixed band, a 8 dBi narrowband omni will give more range for the same mounting. Where the site is a booster with a short feeder, a 3 dBi unit may be sufficient and cheaper.

Ordering

N-Type male is standard, with radome colour and packing quantity confirmed at order. Samples in 3-5 days, production in 15-25 days.

For the narrowband 900-930 MHz version with a shorter radome, the 3 dBi 900 MHz booster omni antenna weighs 0.2 kg and mounts directly on a booster. For higher gain in the 900 MHz ISM band, the 8 dBi IoT omni antenna uses a 1540 mm radome with a 16 degree beam.

Send the band plan, the radio power and the mounting height. The band plan decides whether the 136 MHz span is needed, and the height decides the coverage shape.
